Young Birders of Brevard will be having their first get together at the Viera Wetlands on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 2:00. Gabe plans on talking about how to use a bird field guide and share about the Wings Over Florida program. Then he would like to take a walk on the front, main road of the wetlands to help others learn about identifying some of the birds that are found in the Viera Wetlands. For those that would like, we will be driving around the wetlands and then stopping at various locations to point out other birds. This is open to any child who has an interest to learn more about the awesome sport of Birding! Please wear closed toed shoes and bring some binoculars. We will be having members of the local Audubon Society join us to help Gabe with his meeting....hope to see you there!

Tuesday morning a Gray Kingbird was spotted near the entrance to the plant about 9:30, and again about 3. Richard L. Becker of Jacksonville, visiting with his wife Joan and friends Eileen and Sue from New York, supplied this pic. They also noted more than a dozen Wilson's Snipe during their time at the Wetlands.Gray Kingbirds are unusual birds to find in this part of Florida in the winter, and can easily be mistaken for a Northern Shrike or a Northern Mockingbird from a distance - all three are similarly sized, mostly gray and white birds. This one was initially spotted shortly before the Space Coast Birding Festival in late January. One of the many guests who visited the Wetlands during the festival writes about his sighting of it here:

Today (Friday, February 17) is the first of the four-day 2012 Great Backyard Bird Count. The nice thing about this bird count is that you get to define your own back yard. Today, my back yard includes the Click Ponds. Some highlights were over 800 Am. Coots, a N. Harrier,a Sora, four kinds of ducks (Ring-Necked Ducks, Lesser Scaup, Gadwall, and Blue-Winged Teal), and…
…a Mute Swan.
Like to join in the fun? All you have to do to watch and count birds for 15 minutes, jot down how many of what you see, and input the data before March 5. See http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/ for details. If you're new to birdwatching, join the Beginning Bird Watching tour given by Jason Frederick of the Space Coast Audubon Society. The tour starts at 1PM in the parking lot of the Burger King near Wickham Rd and I-95 on Saturday, 2/18.

Check out our newest visitor - a Mute Swan - at the Northern Click Pond this morning. This bird may have been domesticated somewhere and made his way over to us. What a nice guest...!
